Getting started

An address search returns nothing? Your Google Business Profile contains no postal address. Here is how to add one — and why, if you travel to your customers, you should not.

You go to activate your plate, you type your business address into the search field… and nothing comes up. Not a single suggestion. It is unsettling, but in almost every case the explanation is simple — and it does not come from our site.

Why the search returns nothing

Our search field queries Google Business Profiles directly — what used to be called Google My Business listings. It does not search the web: it searches Google's directory of businesses.

And a Google listing is not required to contain a postal address. If yours has none, there is simply nothing to match when you type an address. Your business does exist on Google, but it is invisible to an address search — on our site and everywhere else.

Two situations, two answers

Before changing anything, work out which one is yours.

You welcome customers at a physical location

Restaurant, shop, practice, salon: your address belongs on your listing. If it is missing, that is an oversight worth fixing — and not only for us. Without an address you do not appear in "near me" searches, nor in Google Maps results for your neighbourhood. You are losing customers every day without knowing it.

You travel to your customers

Plumber, caterer, repair technician, mobile tradesperson: Google asks you to hide your address and declare a service area instead. That is deliberate, it is the correct setup, and you should change nothing.

In that case, search by your business name rather than by address. Our search field works just as well on the name — what it lacks is the address, not your listing.

Adding your address, step by step

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages your listing, then search for your business name in Google — your management panel appears directly.
  2. Open Edit profile, then the Contact tab.
  3. Fill in the full address: number, street, postcode, town.
  4. Save. Google may require re-verification (postcard, phone or video): until that is done, the address does not become public.
  5. Allow time for the change to propagate — usually a few minutes, sometimes a few days.
  6. Come back to Tap2Star and run the search again: your business will appear.
Changing an address can trigger a re-verification of your listing, during which its visibility drops temporarily. That is normal, and it is the price of a complete listing. Do not do it the day before a busy period.

If you are creating your listing now

Fill in the address from the start, before you even deal with photos or opening hours. It is what ties your business to a place in the world: without it, Google knows you exist but not where to find you. Our guide on creating your Google My Business listing covers the whole procedure.

In short: if an address search returns nothing, your Google listing has no address. Add one if you have premises; search by name if you travel to your customers.

Once you have found your listing, the fastest way to land on the right one first time: search by address, then by name. And to set your plate up end to end, follow first steps with my plate.

Frequently asked questions
