Why an activation code on our plates?

The activation code protects your plate against fraudulent activation. We explain why we set it up, how it becomes invisible to you, and how to report a lost or stolen plate.

If you have received a Tap2Star plate, you have probably noticed an activation code printed on it (in the format T2S-XXX-XXX-XXX). This code is not there by chance: it is a deliberate security decision. Here is why we set it up, and how we are working to make it completely transparent for you.

The problem we wanted to avoid

IT security is at the heart of our approach — it is our profession before being a selling point. Very early on, one scenario bothered us: that a malicious person could activate a future customer's plate in their place, even before that customer received it.

Without protection, knowing a product's identifier would be enough to link it to a fraudulent account. Unacceptable: your plate must belong to you, and you alone.

Our first answer: the activation code

To close this door, we set up the activation code: a unique code, physically printed on each product. Combined with the plate's identifier, it ensures that only the legitimate owner — the one holding the product — can activate it on their account. Remote fraudulent activation becomes impossible.

A constraint we managed to lift

We were aware of it: entering a code is a small piece of friction for you. So we looked for — and found — a solution to make this step unnecessary, without sacrificing any security.

This solution is rolled out as new products are manufactured. In practice, in the near future, the activation code will be invisible to you during activation — yet still present in the background to keep protecting you. The best of both worlds: security, without the constraint.

In case of loss or theft: block your plate

Security does not stop at activation. From your Tap2Star interface, you can report a plate as lost or stolen. It is then blocked and becomes unusable: whoever picked it up can no longer do anything with it.

Combined with NFC chip locking, this protection ensures a plate can be neither hijacked nor reactivated on another account.

Key takeaway: the activation code prevents a third party from activating your plate in your place. It is gradually becoming invisible to you, while remaining active behind the scenes. And in case of loss or theft, you block your plate in one click.
