The size of our plates: why 10 × 10 cm?
Some competitors offer 12×12 or 20×20 cm plates. Bigger is not always better: footprint, distance from the NFC chip, higher cost… We explain our choice — and the custom sizes available.
At first glance, a bigger Google review plate seems more effective. Some competitors have understood this and advertise 12 × 12 or even 20 × 20 cm sizes. Yet at Tap2Star, we deliberately chose 10 × 10 cm. It is not a default choice, it is a considered one. Here is why.
Bigger is not necessarily better
A large plate first raises a very concrete problem: where do you put it? On an already crowded till counter, next to a payment terminal, on a small table… space is tight. A 20 × 20 cm plate quickly becomes bulky, whereas a 10 × 10 size fits everywhere.
The real trap: distance to the NFC chip
This is the most important point, and the least known. An NFC chip is localised: it occupies a small area of the plate. The customer must hold their phone near that chip for the read to happen.
On a small 10 × 10 plate, wherever the customer places their phone, they are necessarily close to the chip: the read happens in one tap. On a large 12 × 12 or 20 × 20 plate, if they hold their phone near a corner far from the chip, nothing happens — and they give up.
And for cost reasons, these large plates almost never carry several NFC chips. The result: a single chip has to cover the whole surface, which it cannot do effectively.
10 × 10 cm: small footprint, reliable reading
- Discreet and visible at once: big enough to catch the eye, small enough to fit anywhere.
- Guaranteed one-tap NFC reading: the phone is always close to the chip.
- Controlled cost: you pay for the right product, not for useless surface.
Need another size? We make it custom
10 × 10 cm is our standard, but it is not a constraint. If you wish, we produce custom plates in the size that suits you best: 8 × 8, 12 × 12, 20 × 20, 30 × 20 cm… We are here to advise you according to your use and where the plate will be placed.
For large sizes, we have a clear recommendation: fit several NFC chips pointing to the same destination, in order to cover the whole surface of the plate. That way, wherever the customer holds their phone, the read works — a care few manufacturers take.
